The Tuscany daybed at Alexander Francis has been a popular for many years, so we’ve put together a review of this piece of furniture based on feedback from customers and our own experiences.
The rattan is made from PE resin, a type of plastic which prevents it from becoming damaged by being outside in the elements. Real rattan can easily rot in damp weather, fade in the sun and crack and splinter easily. The PE resin rattan of this daybed won’t suffer from any of those things, which is why it lasts so long and continues to look brand new every year. It’s tightly woven so the rattan maintains its shape and won’t stretch leaving unsightly gaps in the weave.
It’s really easy to clean the rattan frame, using a brush to sweep off any leaves or debris that may collect over the winter months and for any tougher dirt clean using a damp sponge. Some bits of dirty can get caught between the weave but usually the brush will do the job as the bristles will pick out the bits of dirt.
The cushions are 10cm thick which is more than enough padding so that they feel plump and supportive. The cushion inserts are a comfortable but firm shape retaining foam that will keep your daybed looking good even with regular use.
The cushion covers are removable with a zip at the back to remove the inserts, so that the covers can be washed. They machine wash very well, the team at Alexander Francis recommended a low temperature wool wash using a colour safe detergent for best results. The daybed comes with cream cushions as standard which means they can be prone to showing up marks so it’s worth putting the covers through the washing machine at the end of the summer before storing them away somewhere dry for the winter months.
The cushions are splashproof (not 100% waterproof) which means any spills can be swiftly removed by hitting the back of the cushion and the droplets should come off. However, the cushions cannot be left outside in the rain as it will soak into the material and could cause the covers to develop mould or damage the structural integrity of the foam inserts.
This daybed has plenty of space to stretch out or snuggle up with someone else, it’s 2.8m wide and 1.65m deep providing enough space for 3-4 people to sit with their legs stretched out. As you can see in the photo below of Suzanne Drummond from County Durham, the daybed is much larger than it appears in our studio photos. With this in mind, it’s worth carefully measuring the space you have in your garden to make sure this daybed will fit.
The cushions are 10cm thick which is more than enough padding so that they feel plump and supportive. The cushion inserts are a comfortable but firm shape retaining foam that will keep your daybed looking good even with regular use. Having cushions for the seat, back and sides means you feel well supported from all side and can really lean back and sink in.
The modular design of this daybed means it can also be arranged to provide a larger seating area by placing the narrow end of the two footstools against the edge of the daybed sofas. This makes the whole daybed into a U shape (as pictured below) which means you could fit on 5 or 6 people comfortably. One of the footstools can be turned into a coffee table by removing the cushion and placing the provided piece of glass on top. This is a very handy feature for entertaining so everyone can put their drinks and nibbles down rather than trying to balance them on the arms of the daybed which aren’t an ideal resting surface.
- Modular design so it can be a daybed one day, a u-shaped sofa or a sofa with a coffee table. Very flexible!
- Comfortable 10cm thick cushions on the seats and the backs – ideal for stretching out and soaking up some sunshine
- The rattan is made for being outdoors, it’s easy maintenance and looks good every year. It even comes with a 5 year guarantee.
- Light cream cushions can show up dirt easily, BUT, they can be washed so this isn’t a huge problem
- If you’ve got a small space then this daybed is large and might not fit, make sure you measure up first. It being big isn’t a bad thing as you get a lot for your month, it’s only a con if you don’t have room for it.
