Is PE Rattan Garden Furniture perfect for you?
PE resin rattan is a synthetic material rather than natural rattan which is often known as wicker.
Wicker requires more maintenance and care. It is prone to damage from the elements which drastically reduces its life span when used outdoors and will eventually rot if it’s not kept dry and looked after.
Synthetic polyethylene rattan or “PE rattan” will withstand the outdoor elements without a cover, which means it is perfect for use as outdoor garden furniture. It will continue to look good for years with minimal maintenance.
Buyer Beware – Poor Quality Rattan Garden Furniture
Rattan garden furniture is a popular choice for households but with sellers sourcing cheap rattan garden furniture it’s hard to know which set to buy, so look out for the following:
- Is the rattan a solid colour all the way through? – With cheap rattan, if you accidentally scratch the surface the real colour of the plastic below will show which is often an unattractive colour such as orange. Good quality PE resin rattan is a solid colour throughout the weave and can be repaired by applying heat from a hairdryer.
- Furniture guarantee – Sets with a 1year guarantee won’t give you much confidence as a buyer. Our furniture comes with a 5 year guarantee and is tested by us for at least 12 months before being sold. All of us own a piece of our garden furniture and have experience with the quality. Although I’ve had one of our original Tuscany brown rattan corner sofa sets for 8 years now and it’s still going strong.
- Feet Materials – Ideally the feet of your garden furniture should be stainless steel which is resistant to rust and corrosion. Some cheaper sets will have rubber stoppers, just be careful not to drag your garden furniture across the patio and risk damage.
- What does “KD” mean? – Good quality sets will come fully assembled. If the item description says KD then it means “knocked down” which means it is flat packed or self-assembly required. Although you can get some good budget sets they will not be as durable or as aesthetically pleasing to the eye as a fully assembled set.
Things to look out for
You can often tell if a rattan furniture set is fully assembled or self-assembly by the construction. If you want a set to last, then fully assembled rattan garden furniture is the best option for you. Self-assembly frames are not as strong because you have screws holding it together, whereas fully assembled frames are welded making it more robust and durable. If the product description doesn’t state that its flat packed, then look for the joins in the images.
Don’t buy thin cushions. They won’t last and the furniture will be uncomfortable. We use 10cm – 20cm for our sofa sets for extra comfort plus all our covers have zips to enable you to clean with ease.
Uneven weaving. Although more for aesthetic reasons, with hand weaved furniture you will have some variance but the weave should be straight and not weaved diagonal.
