Garden Spring Clean
At the first sight of sunshine I decide to spring clean my garden and head to my local DIY store or Garden Centre to buy essential items to do all the things i should have done in spring.
If like me you start your garden spring clean late and spend more time working in the garden in the sun rather than relaxing, then read my top tips to get organised. Get ready to sit back and relax when the sun comes out.
Tip 1 – Tidy Up
Sweep up any debris. Have a general tidy up and remove leaves and other debris from your flower beds and lawn. Deep clean your patio or decking.
Tip 2 – Paint Woodwork
Although it’s colder outside this is the ideal time to fix broken panels and trellises. Treat your fence panels, trellises, shed and any other wooden structures. This is probably the most time consuming job I put off. Put a jumper on and jump in, you don’t want to be doing this in the peak summer months. Have a tidy up in your shed too! You will be glad you did.
Tip 3 – Plant Summer Bulbs
Oriental lilies – large fragrant blooms are available in a range of colours and heights. Plant a foot apart and make sure to add support to the stems as they grow.
Gladioli – Available in flamboyant blooms that will brighten any garden. Although i love the creamy white Sancerre –
Begonia – Perfect for hanging baskets and window boxes, these bright coloured flowers will last until winter. My favorite is the Begonia Picotee.
Tip 4 – Clean your BBQ
Part of your garden spring clean should include cooking and heating items. Don’t leave cleaning your BBQ, pizza oven or patio heater until the day you want to use it. Give it a deep clean so that you are ready to fire it up. Everybody hates this job but once it’s done you are good to go.
Tip 5 – Choosing Garden Furniture
When you spring clean your garden think about the garden furniture you need. Don’t buy furniture too large for your space, you don’t want it to dominate your garden. Would you use a dining table or a sofa set more? Be realistic with your budget.
There are so many styles to choose from. Think about the style you want first. Wood, rattan, and metal are all widely available in a variety of designs and sizes. Personally I would want low maintenance furniture that I can leave out all year so I would look for rattan or metal.
I want it all but know realistically I cannot fit loungers, a sofa, and a dining set in my garden. What i can have is one piece of furniture that ticks all the boxes. That’s why i chose what is know as a casual dining set. It’s perfect, i can lounge out or have dinner outside with my family.
Don’t leave it too late. Most offers for garden furniture are during the winter months. Companies often offer pre-order discounts which let you order at the discounted price and it will be delivered once it arrives into stock. wait and you could end up paying full price.
